Rules

Rules of the Bujinkan Dojo

  1. Our purpose is to live a healthy life without causing harm to society by cultivating mutual relationships between nature and humanity through the martial ways.
  2. All members must possess a valid annual membership card issued by the Honbu Dojo (Japan). There are two types of membership cards:
    • a) General Membership Card: For all members of the Bujinkan Dojo.
    • b) Shidoshikai Card: This applies to those holding ranks from 1st Dan to 4th Dan inclusive, who have direct authorization from Japan to teach and are referred to as Shidoshi-ho. Those holding ranks from 5th Dan and above are referred to as Shidoshi.
  3. Rank Diplomas: Rank diplomas must be issued by Soke Masaaki Hatsumi. Diplomas are issued from Kyu grades up to 10th Dan.
  4. Teaching Authorizations: Instructors who conduct classes must possess written authorization from Soke Masaaki Hatsumi to carry out this work. There are two types of teaching authorizations:
    • a) Shidoshi-ho authorization, from 1st Dan to 4th Dan.
    • b) Shidoshi authorization, from 5th Dan and above.
  5. Validity of Cards and Diplomas: Only membership cards and diplomas issued by the Bujinkan Honbu Dojo (Soke Masaaki Hatsumi) will be recognized as valid. Individuals who violate this principle will be expelled from the Bujinkan Dojo. Furthermore, people who break the law and individuals with mental illness cannot be members.
  6. The Bujin symbol is copyrighted (protected by law), and all rights for reproduction and use worldwide are reserved. If someone wishes to use the symbol, authorization must first be requested from the Honbu Dojo in Japan. In Spain, it is a registered trademark under concession title No. 1,783,481; therefore, anyone wishing to use the anagram and name “Bujinkan Dojo” must first request authorization from the Honbu Dojo in Japan.
  7. Bufu Ikkan: Members must follow bufu ikkan (the martial ways as a principle of life) to protect justice and happiness through the martial ways, without being driven by personal gain or desires.

Bujinkan Dojo Participation Guidelines

The Bujinkan shall be open only to those who uphold the rules of the Bujinkan Dojo. Anyone who does not meet these requirements will not be permitted to join.

Specifically:

  1. Only those who have read and agree to these rules will be allowed to participate.
  2. Only those willing to exercise true patience, self-control, and dedication will be allowed to participate.
  3. A certificate of good health is required. Specifically, individuals with mental illness, drug addiction, or anyone mentally unbalanced will not be allowed to join. The reason for limiting access to such individuals is due to the danger they might pose to their peers—for example, those with infectious or contagious diseases, individuals with abnormal or psychological personalities, and individuals lacking self-control.
  4. Individuals with criminal records will not be accepted. Troublemakers, those who commit crimes, and anyone living in Japan who violates domestic laws will be expelled.
  5. Those who do not abide by these rules—whether practitioners or members of society—or who commit reprehensible or derogatory acts will be expelled. Up to now, the Bujinkan has been open to a large number of people who came to Japan. Among them, unfortunately, are those who have committed acts of violence while drunk, the insane, and troublemakers who thought only of themselves without considering how their actions would adversely affect others. Through their actions, these people have discarded the tradition of the Righteous Heart of the Bujinkan. From now on, all such people will be expelled.
  6. In the event of accidents occurring during training (inside or outside the Dojo), one must not cause trouble for the Bujinkan. This is an extremely important point. Those who are unwilling to take personal responsibility for accidents occurring during Bujinkan training will not be admitted. To reiterate for clarity, the Bujinkan will not assume responsibility for any accident occurring in the course of training, regardless of the location.
  7. Those who join the Bujinkan must have their annual membership credential. This credential does not only preserve the honor of Bujinkan members; it indicates that you are part of a single whole whose members are united with a warrior’s heart to better themselves through training and friendship. This elevates the glory of warrior virtue and encompasses both brotherly love and loyalty.
  8. The Bujinkan tradition recognizes Nature and the universality of all human life, understanding what flows naturally between both sides. “The secret principle of Taijutsu is to know the fundamentals of peace. The study of this is the path to the immovable heart (fudoshin).”
